One false suspicion I had about being an imam before taking the job was that the brief and comprehensive duaas of Allah’s Messenger ﷺ as found in Hisnul-Muslim would be enough. In many circumstances, due to the standard that other imams before us have set, congregations expect us to make long duaas at a variety of occasions, from qunoot of witr to wedding blessings, before death and upon burial. And I never would have expected how often, out of the blue, people would come to me asking me to make duaa for someone, or requesting a special duaa or even a session of duaa for someone.
And when attending interfaith events, I was always amazed at how Christian and Jewish clergy would be able to invoke beautiful and befitting invocations at immediate request, whereas, before similar events, I would often request to know exactly what I should prepare of formal words and benedictions.
With all that in mind, I’ve prepared a few invocations that are good for frequent review and pulling out for when the occasion calls. Sometimes the imam will only be informed at jumu`ah time that there will be a janaazah immediately afterwards to his he must follow and “perform”. Some of the duaas here are recognizable from the Sunnah, others are taken from the compilations of imams while some still are just from my own self. So whatever of here that is right is from Allah and whatever that is wrong is from my sinful self and shaytaan.
BEFORE DEATH:
When called to make invocations for those in their last days or moments, my routine is to begin by reciting Surah al-Fatihah, seeking Allah’s blessings through it. I may also recite the end of al-Mu’minoon or al-Hashr and the 3 Quls. Then I’ll recall the stages of the Hereafter, and make a special duaa with each one. And then it is good to finish with a closing duaa from the Quran. I have gone ahead and italicized some words that should be changed during duaa to reflect the gender of the mad`oo lahu.
O Allah O Wahhaab keep his heart firm through his last moments and protect him from the whispering and temptation and forms of the misleading devil.
O Allah make this brother of ours one whose soul is pulled easily and gently out of their body and carried in the finest and most pleasant of capacities up through the heavens. O Allah make them among those who the angels speak happily about and they are called by the best of the names they were known by in this Dunya.
- اللهم إني أسألُكَ يا أرحمَ الراحمين أن يكون (هذا العبدُ) ممن يُبَشَّرُ عند الموتِ بِرَوحٍ ورَيحانٍ ورَبٍّ راضٍ غير غَضْبان
- اللهم اجْعَلْ مَرَضَه كَفَّارةً لِجَمِيعِ ذُنُوبِه
O Allah make them among those whose burial is hastened towards goodness and reward.
ANYTIME BEFORE OR AFTER DEATH:
- Allah forgive this soul and have mercy upon him as he is coming to meet you and those who have passed before him.
- Allah accept his shahadah and tawheed.
- Allah forgive him and pardon him his mistakes and sins and transgressions.
- Allah we ask You and beseech You humbly as your slaves who are poor weak and in loss without Your Mercy and Grace and Favor, Turn to us and Turn to your slave… And purify him of his sins as You are the One Who Forgives.
- Allah pardon him his mistakes and You are the best of those who pardon and forgive.
- Allah Ya Ghaafir-al-dhanb, Ya Ghafoor, Ya Raheem, Ya Ghaffaar, Ya Arham al-Raahimeen, we call upon the One Who if our sins filed the earth and reached the heavens those sins would not be too much for You to forgive, pardon and overlook, nor would that forgiveness decrease Your kingdom. So forgive our dear brother in faith, pardon him his mishaps and overlook his faults.
- Allah we have no wali or wakeel besides You so forgive our brother and mercy upon him.
- Allah grant him firmness and the word of truth when responding to your angelic servants in the grave.
- Allah, show him his place in Paradise so that when he enters it after the Bridge, it is as familiar to him as his home in the dunya and O Allah close off their place in Hell so that he never sees it again and so that he becomes more hasty to the Resurrection.
- Allah protect him from the punishments of the grave
- Allah, let his good deeds defend him and repel the torments of the grave.
- Allah keep his body and soul at rest and peace until Resurrection.
- Allah let his deeds meet him in the best of forms and carrying him through the trials of the Day of Resurrection.
- Allah make him among those who are shaded by Your throne on the Day that there is no shade but Yours, the Throne which shades the just, the lovers of your houses of worship, the generous and charitable, the crying and penitent, the chaste and God-fearing, those who love each other for Your sake and those who grow up in Your worship.
- Allah let your face shine on him in the Hereafter.
- Allah, make him among those whose account is light and easy and their mistakes covered and erased.
- Allah Make their scale of good deeds heavy, and give him his book of deeds in his right hand and increase his joy.
- Allah let him cross the bridge over hell with great speed and be saved from falling in.
- Allah, grant him intercession on the Day of Resurrection and make him among those saved from the evil consequences of their deeds.
- Allah, make him among the first to enter Paradise and the first to be grateful for Your supreme immeasurable gifts and mercy.
- Allah turn the hearts of Your slaves to forgiveness for him so that he has no debts in the Hereafter.
- Allah grant him paradise and save him from the fire. O Allah raise his levels in paradise.
- Allah, guide his survivors to beautiful patience, and magnify their reward after taking their kindred.

O Allah forgive our living and our deceased, our present and our absent, our young and our advanced, our males and our females; O Allah whoever among us you keep living, then make them live upon Islam and whoever among us whose soul You take then take it upon faith. O Allah do not prevent us from his reward nor let us stray after him. |
قال ابن ماجه: … عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا صَلَّى عَلَى جِنَازَةٍ يَقُولُ “اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِحَيِّنَا وَمَيِّتِنَا وَشَاهِدِنَا وَغَائِبِنَا وَصَغِيرِنَا وَكَبِيرِنَا وَذَكَرِنَا وَأُنْثَانَا اللَّهُمَّ مَنْ أَحْيَيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَأَحْيِهِ عَلَى الإِسْلاَمِ وَمَنْ تَوَفَّيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَتَوَفَّهُ عَلَى الإِيمَانِ اللَّهُمَّ لاَ تَحْرِمْنَا أَجْرَهُ وَلاَ تُضِلَّنَا بَعْدَهُ“ . وأخرجه أبو داود بتبديل “الإيمان” و”الإسلام”، وأخرج الترمذي والنسائي نحوه عن أبي إبراهيم الأنصاري عن أبيه مقصَّراً. |

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ وَاغْسِلْهُ بِمَاءٍ وَثَلْجٍ وَبَرَدٍ وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا يُنَقَّى الثَّوْبُ الأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ وَأَبْدِلْهُ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ وَأَهْلاً خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَزَوْجًا خَيْرًا مِنْ زَوْجِهِ وَقِهِ فِتْنَةَ الْقَبْرِ وَعَذَابَ النَّارِ. أخرجه مسلم والنسائي |

O Allah, so and so, son of so and so, is in Thy protection and in Thy nearer presence, so guard him from the trial in the grave and the punishment in Hell. Thou art faithful and worthy of praise. O Allah, forgive him and show him mercy. Thou art the forgiving and the merciful one. |
(اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ فُلاَنَ بْنَ فُلاَنٍ فِي ذِمَّتِكَ وَحَبْلِ جِوَارِكَ فَقِهِ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْقَبْرِ وَعَذَابِ النَّارِ وَأَنْتَ أَهْلُ الْوَفَاءِ وَالْحَمْدِ اللَّهُمَّ فَاغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ. أخرجه ابن ماجه، ورواه أبو داود |

(اللهم عَبْدُكَ وابْنُ أَمَتِكَ احْتاجَ إِلى رَحْمَتِكَ، وَأَنْتَ غَنِيٌّ عَنْ عَذابِه، إِنْ كان مُحْسِناً فَزِدْ في حَسَناتِه، وإن كان مُسِيئاً فَتَجاوَزْ عَنْه). أخرجه الحاكم وصححه ووافقه الذهبي، ١/٣٥٩، وانظر: أحكام الجنائز للألباني، ص١٢٥ .. |

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ له وَارْفَعْ دَرَجَتَهُ فِي الْمَهْدِيِّينَ وَاخْلُفْهُ فِي عَقِبِهِ فِي الْغَابِرِينَ وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلَهُ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ اللَّهُمَّ افْسَحْ لَهُ فِي قَبْرِهِ وَنَوِّرْ لَهُ فِيهِ |

|
يا مَن هو أَرحمُ مِن عِبادِه بِأَنفُسِهم وَمِنْ الأُمِّ بِوَلَدِها |
|
|
اللهم أَنِرْ قبرَ مَن حَنَّ له القَلبُ |
|
|
اللهم هَبْ له سَعةً في قَبرِه لا يُرا لها نهاية وهَبْ لِمَضْجَعِه طِيباً وَلِظُلْمَتِهِ نُوراً ولِذُنوبِه غُفْراناً وبَرِّدْ قَبرَه وَزِدْه إِحْساناً فَوقَ إحْسانِه واجْعَلِ الجَنةَ مَسْكَنَهُ |

|
اللهم ارْحَمْهُ واسْتُرْهُ فوق الأرضِ وتَحت َالأرضِ ويوم العَرْضِ عَليكَ |
|
|
اللهم قِه عَذابَكَ يَومَ تَبْعَثُ عِبادَكَ |
|
|
اللهم انْزِلْ نُوراً مِن نُورِكَ عَليه اللهم نَوِّرْ له قَبْرَهُ وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ وآنِسْ وَحْشَتَهُ |
|
|
اللهم ارْجِعْ نَفْسَه إلَيك راضيةً مَرْضِيَّةً وأَدْخِلْهُ في جَنَّتِكَ مَعَ عِبادِكَ الصَّالِحِينَ |
|
|
اللهم انْقُلْهُ مِن ضِيقِ اللُّحُودِ ومِن مَراتِع الدُّودِ الى جَنَّاتِكَ جَنَّاتِ الخُلُودِ. لا اله الا انت يا مَنَّانُ يا بَدِيعَ السمواتِ والأرضِ تَغَمَّدِ ( المتوفّى ) بِرَحْمَتِكَ يا أرْحَمَ الرّاحِمينَ |

|
اللهم أسْقِه مِن حَوضِ نَبِيِّكَ مُحمدٍ ﷺ شُرْبةً هَنِيئةً مَرِيئةً لا يَظْمَأُ بَعدَها أَبَداً |
|
|
اللهم وارْزُقْه لَذّةَ النَّظَرِ إلى وَجْهِكَ والشَّوقَ إلى لِقائكَ |
|
|
اللهم أَطْعِمْهُ مِن الجَنَّةِ وأَسْقِهِ مِن الجَنّةِ وأَرِه مَكانَه مِن الجَنَّةِ وَقُلْ له ادْخُلْ مِن أَيِّ بابٍ تَشاءُ. |

اللهم اجعل ذُرِيَّتَه ذُرِّيَّةً صالِحة ًبَعدَه يَدْعُون لهُ بِخَيرٍ وأَلْحِقهُ بِهِم يا أَكْرَمَ الأَكْرَمِين |

|
اللهم إنّ ( المتوفى ) عَبدُك ابنُ عبدِكَ يحتاجُ إلى رَحْمتِكَ وأنتَ غَنيٌّ عَنْ عَذابِه فارْحَمه |
|
|
اللهم افتَحْ له أبوابَ جَنّتِكَ وأَبوابَ رَحْمتِكَ وأَغْلَقْ عَلَيه أَبوابَ العذابِ والجَحِيمَ وارْفَعْ عَنه مَقتَكَ وغَضَبَكَ يا رَحْمن الدنيا ورَحِيمَ الآخرة |
|
|
اللهم ارحم رُوحاً صَعِدتْ إِليكَ لم يَعُدْ بينَنا وبينَها إلا الدُعاءُ. اللهم ارْحَمْها واغْفِر لها وانظُرْ لها بِعَينِ لُطفِكَ وكَرَمِكَ يا ربَّ العالَمين |
|
|
اللهم حَرِّم على لَحمِهِ ودمِه وبَشَرَتِه النار واللهم مَتِّع سَمْعَه وَبَصَرَه وقَلْبَه فيما يُلَقِّي بالآخِرة |
|
|
اللهم وأَظِلَّه تَحت َعَرْشِكَ يَومَ لا ظِلَّ إلا ظِلُّكَ وَلا باقي إلا وَجْهُكَ |
|
|
اللهم اكتُبْهُ عِنْدَكَ مِن الصالِحِين والصِّدِّيقِين والشُّهَداءِ والأَخيارِ والَأبْرارِ في العِلِّيِّين. |
|
|
اللهم اكْتُبْه عِنْدَكَ مِن الصابِرِين وجازِه جَزاءَ الصابرين المُحْتَسِبِين. |
|
|
اللهم أَرِنا سَعَةَ رَحْمتَكَ بقَبولِ وتَوْفِيرِ عَمَلِ عَبدِكَ |
|
|
اللهم إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الذي يَمْحُو ما يشاءُ ويُثْبِت وعِندَكَ عِلمُ الكِتابِ. فامْحُ عَبْدَكَ مِن السِّجِّين ومِن الغافِلين وأَثْبِتْهُ في الأبرارِ وابْعَثْهُ في المَهْدِيِّين وسُقْهُ إلى جَنّاتِ النَّعِيم. |

|
اللهم تَقَبَّلْ مِنْهُ القَلِيلَ وتَجاوَزْ عَنه التَقْصِيرَ |
|
|
اللهم إنا نَسأَلُكَ في هذِه الساعةِ إن كان (المتوفى) في سُرُورٍ فَزِدْ في سُرُورِه ومُنَّ نَعِيمَكَ عليه. وإن كان في شِدّةٍ فَنَجِّه مِن عَذابِك وأنتَ الغَنيُّ الحَمِيدُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ يا أَرْحَمَ الراحمين. واجعل آخِرَ عَذابِه عَذابَ الدُّنيا |
|
|
اللهم بَيِّضْ وَجْهَه يَومَ تَبْيَضُّ وُجُوهُ وَتَسْوَدُّ وُجُوهٌ. |
|
|
اللهم ارْحَمْ غُرْبَتَهُ [وارْحَم شيبته] اللهم أَنْتَ الغَنِيُّ ونحن الفُقَراءُ فأنتَ غَنِيٌّ عن عَذابِه يا غَنِيُّ يا حَمِيدُ |
|
|
اللهم ثَبِّتْه بِالقَولِ الثابِتِ وارْفَعْ دَرَجَتَهُ وَاغْفِرْ خَطِيئَتَهُ وَثَقِّلْ مَوازِينَهُ |
|
|
اللهم وثَبِّت قَدَمَه يومَ تَزِلُّ فيه الأَقدامُ |
|
|
اللهم حاسِبْه حِساباً يَسِيراً وَيَمِّنْ كِتابَه |
|
|
اللهم إنا نسأَلُكَ بأَسْمائكَ الحُسنى وصِفاتِكَ العُليا وباسمِكَ الأَعْظَمِ أن تَتَقَبَّلَ مِنَّا دُعاءَنا بِقَبُولٍ حَسَنٍ وأنْ تَجْعَلَهُ خَالِصاً لِوَجْهِكَ الكَرِيمِ |
|
|
وارْحَمْنا إذا صِرْنا إِلى ما صَارَ إِليه وجازِه بِالحَسَناتِ إِحْساناً وبِالسَّيِّئَاتِ عَفْواً وَغُفْراناً وَافْتَحْ أَبْوابَ السَّماءِ لِرُوحِه بِرَحْمَتِكَ يا أَرْحَمَ الراحِمين |

|
رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلِإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالْإِيمَانِ وَلَا تَجْعَلْ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلًّا لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ رَءُوفٌ رَحِيمٌ (10) |

رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَيْتَنَا وَهَبْ لَنَا مِنْ لَدُنْكَ رَحْمَةً إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْوَهَّابُ (8) |
|
|
نَسَأَلُ اللهَ العَظِيمَ رَبَّ العَرْشِ العَظِيمِ أَنْ يَتَقَبَّلَ مِنَّا وَمِنْكُمُ الدُّعاءَ وَيَغْفِرَ لِمَوتانا ومَوتى المُسْلِمين وَأَنْ يُحسِّنَ خاتَمتَنا إنَّه قادِرٌ على كُلِّ شَيءٍ |
{رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِنْ نَسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَا إِصْرًا كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِنَا رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنَّا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا أَنْتَ مَوْلَانَا فَانْصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ}
وصلِّ اللهم وسلِّم على نبيك محمد وعلى آله وصحبه أجمعين. آمين
